Bioheat® Fuel Basics

Bioheat® fuel is a blend of biodiesel and ultra-low-sulfur heating oil (ULSHO). A more eco-friendly alternative to both traditional heating oil and natural gas, Bioheat® fuel can be used in existing home heating oil systems and is available in three tiers based on how much biodiesel is blended into the ULSHO base stock.

  • Blends ranging from 2% to 5% biodiesel (B2–B5) are referred to as Bioheat® fuel.
  • Blends ranging from 5% to 20% biodiesel (B5-B20) are referred to as Bioheat Plus® fuel.
  • Blends beyond 20% biodiesel (B20+) are referred to as Bioheat SuperPlus® fuel.

Production

Biodiesel—the renewable component of Bioheat® fuel blends is produced across America from a variety of raw materials. Biodiesel producers convert waste fats, oils, and greases among other abundant low-carbon feedstocks in fuel which can be burned in place of petroleum. America’s biodiesel producers manufacture more than three billion gallons of biodiesel annually and ensure that homeowners have access to this highly renewable fuel each heating season.

Energy Balance

Biodiesel is produced from a highly efficient and low-energy process called transesterification. This means biodiesel producers can produce a significant amount of renewable energy in relationship to the fossil energy they put in. This ratio, commonly known as an energy balance or return on energy invested exceeds 4.5:1[1]. As producers increasingly incorporate more renewable energy and find ways to reduce overall energy usage in their already highly efficient process, this number has grown. While biodiesel producers are increasing their energy balance, petroleum is becoming more difficult to extract, relying on tar sands and fracking. This has caused the energy balance of petroleum to decline from 100:1 in the early 20th century to as low as 4:1.[2]
