Among the many reasons why consumers, business owners, and policy makers are looking for renewable energy solutions, community health is one that everyone can agree on. Clean Fuels Alliance America, in partnership with Trinity Consultants, has recently released a report from a landmark study investigating the potential health benefits of biodiesel and Bioheat® fuel.

The research in the Trinity Report shows that transitioning to B100 Bioheat® fuel, or 100% biodiesel, can significantly improve our health and greatly reduce the risk of major health problems. Read on to learn more about the key takeaways from the study.

4 Big Health Benefits of Bioheat® Fuel and Biodiesel

Research for the Trinity Report was conducted in 13 different cities across the United States that are greatly exposed to high rates of petroleum diesel pollution. Key findings from the study showed that using 100% biodiesel in the home heating fuel and transportation sectors would:

1. Prevent premature deaths
The report found that 100% biodiesel heating and transportation fuel would prevent on average 340 premature deaths per year.

2. Significantly reduced cancer risk
When Bioheat® fuel made from 100% biodiesel is used in place of petroleum heating oil, the study found an 86% reduced cancer risk. In the transportation sector, benefits included a potential 45% reduction in cancer risk.

3. Fewer respiratory problems
When Bioheat® fuel made from 100% biodiesel is used in place of petroleum heating oil, the study found 17,000 fewer lung problems, and when heavy-duty trucks, such as semis, used B100, results showed 203,000 fewer or lessened asthma attacks.

4. Improved daily health
Overall, transitioning to Bioheat® fuel and biodiesel also showed great benefits for daily public health, where reduced health issues would also result in 46,000 fewer sick days.

“We have always known that biodiesel offers a better and cleaner alternative to petroleum diesel,” Clean Fuels Alliance America CEO Donnell Rehagen said. “This study quantifies the health benefits and shows that by using renewable fuels like biodiesel and renewable diesel, we are bringing positive change to people’s lives, the nation’s health and the economy.”
